Negotiate an Offer

Did you know most employers expect a negotiation phase? A common myth creates fear that negotiating can cause a job offer to be retracted. They may say “no” to your terms, but that still leaves you with the decision of accepting the offer or not. A thoughtful and respectful negotiation is your way of advocating for yourself.

Salary is often what is thought of in negotiation conversations, however you can also consider negotiating:

  • The offer deadline
  • Start date
  • Signing bonus (if they cannot raise your salary, some companies are open to negotiating a signing bonus!)
  • Relocation expenses
  • Work from home opportunities
  • Position title
  • Additional benefits and schedule (not as common, but will depend on the organization)

Always be sure to get an offer in writing prior to accepting!
