Job and Internship Search Strategies

Before starting to look for that next opportunity, be sure you have focused your search by exploring your interests and doing your research. A tailored search goes faster than applying to every opportunity with the same resume. Be prepared with your tools including your resume/cover letter and LinkedIn profile.

The job search can often feel like a job itself. We recommend staying organized with a job search tracker (find our template in the resources below). To save some time we also recommend setting up saved searches to get notified when new opportunities are posted. The earlier you apply the better! As a SMUMN student you already have a Handshake account, however be sure you build a complete profile as 80% of students with a complete profile receive a message from a recruiter. Follow our guide on building your profile here.

Handshake and External Links Disclaimer
Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota contracts with the online job and internship posting database system, Handshake. While positions and organizations are researched before accepting them, it is still possible for fraudulent or unethical companies to get through the investigation process. Content on external links (outside of smumn.edu) is not reviewed or vetted for safety. It is the responsibility of those using any job search systems or internet links to recognize the dangers of online/internet job searching. Carefully research all employers/organizations, positions, and contacts before providing personal information or applying for positions.
